The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism is essential training for all health and social care staff.

Developed in response to Oliver McGowan’s story, the training is co-delivered by people with lived experience, making it both powerful and practical. It’s now a legal requirement and a vital step toward more inclusive, person-centred care. We offer all aspects of the Oliver McGowan training and can adapt it to suit your workforce.

Oliver McGowan - Tier 1
​What it covers:
A brief overview of key topics such as understanding autism and learning disabilities, communication, reasonable adjustments, person-centred support, and promoting independence.
It aims to build empathy, challenge misconceptions, and improve the quality of care through authentic, experience-led learning.

Duration:
It consists of two parts: a 90-minute eLearning module followed by a one-hour live online session co-delivered by experts with lived experience and subject matter facilitators.

Location:
Online over Teams or Zoom.
We can create a session for your workforce, or they can attend one of our open sessions.
​
​
Who it's aimed at:
Tier 1 is suitable for staff who do not provide direct care but still interact with or support individuals in various roles.

Requirements:
Completion of the Part 1 eLearning module is required before attending . There is more information available via the Dorset Nexus web pages and on the NHSE Hub. Delegates will need to register on the NHS England E-learning for Healthcare (ELFH) platform and then complete the training. The training takes about 90 minutes to complete.

Oliver McGowan - Tier 2




​What it covers:
It builds on the eLearning module (which must be completed beforehand) and is co-delivered by trainers with lived experience, making the learning deeply authentic and impactful.
​
The training is split into two sessions:

Morning: Learning Disability – covers diagnostic overshadowing, reasonable adjustments, communication strategies, the Mental Capacity Act, hospital passports, and insights from the LeDeR programme.
​

Afternoon: Autism – explores sensory differences, respectful language, anxiety triggers, inclusive practices, and personal experiences from autistic trainers.
​
Tier 2 aligns with the Core Capabilities Framework and aims to equip staff with the practical knowledge, empathy, and confidence to deliver safe, person-centred care.

Duration:
One-day course from 9.00am to 4.00pm.
